Standards of Practice for Sewer Scope Inspections
Purpose:
To establish clear guidelines and standards for conducting sewer scope inspections to ensure consistency, reliability, and accuracy in the identification of potential issues within sewer lines.
1. Scope of Inspection:
1.1. The sewer scope inspection involves visually examining the interior of the main sewer line using a specialized camera to identify potential defects or obstructions.
1.2. The inspection is limited to accessible sewer lines from the point of entry (e.g., cleanout or other accessible openings) to the municipal connection or septic tank.
1.3. The inspection does not include repairs, excavation, or locating underground utilities.
2. Inspector Qualifications:
2.1. Inspectors are trained and certified in sewer scope operations and equipment usage.
3. Equipment Requirements:
3.1. Use a high-resolution sewer scope camera capable of recording video and capturing images.
3.2. Ensure all equipment is clean, sanitized, and in proper working condition before each inspection.
4. Pre-Inspection Protocol:
4.1. Verify the availability of access points (e.g., cleanouts, toilets) for the sewer line.
4.2. If the traversing of the system allows, confirm the property’s sewer system type (municipal or septic).
5. Inspection Procedure:
5.1. Locate and access the cleanout or appropriate entry point.
5.2. Insert the sewer scope camera into the sewer line, advancing slowly to ensure thorough inspection.
5.3. Document the condition of the pipe, noting:
Material composition (e.g., PVC, cast iron, clay, etc.).
Signs of damage (e.g., cracks, breaks, or corrosion).
Obstructions (e.g., roots, debris, grease buildup).
Slope issues or standing water.
Connections, joints, and any unusual features.
5.4. Record video footage and take images as necessary for reporting.
5.5. Withdraw the camera carefully, ensuring no damage to the equipment or sewer line.
6. Post-Inspection Protocol:
6.1. Provide a written report that includes:
Summary of findings.
Photos and/or video documentation.
Recommendations for further evaluation or repair, if needed.
6.2. Advise the client to consult a licensed plumber for any necessary repairs.
7. Limitations:
7.1. The inspection is non-invasive and limited to visible and accessible sections of the sewer line.
7.2. Conditions beyond the scope of the camera (e.g., blockages preventing further advancement) will be noted, and additional steps may be recommended.
7.3. This inspection does not guarantee the future performance or longevity of the sewer line.
7.4. The inspection will be for the main line only. Auxiliary and/or secondary lines will not be accessed due to size limitations and accessibility.
8. Safety and Environmental Considerations:
8.1. Follow proper safety protocols when handling equipment and accessing sewer lines.
8.2. Dispose of waste material or debris encountered during the inspection responsibly.
8.3. Avoid causing damage to the property during the inspection process.
9. Professional Conduct:
9.1. Maintain professionalism and integrity in all interactions with clients.
9.2. Ensure clear communication of findings without exaggeration or misrepresentation.
9.3. Respect client confidentiality and property.
10. Recordkeeping:
10.1. Retain inspection reports, videos, and images for a minimum of one year.
10.2. Provide clients with copies of all relevant documentation promptly.
